Sewing Basics for Every Body Book Tour – Day 5 The Dylan Project

sewing basics for every body

It’s the last day of my Sewing Basics for Every Body introductions today, which means that……..tomorrow is publication day!!

If you have pre-ordered a signed copy direct from me, thank you, today I will be mostly parcelling them up and giving my biceps a workout taking them all to our local post office…..let’s hope they don’t ban me after I dump this lot on them!!

So, on with our introductions to the projects awaiting your scissors in the book…..

One of the greatest challenges for makers can be outerwear; the fabrics, the lining, the components the complexity of the construction and styling details, all can feel a bit daunting.

Dylan is an outerwear project that I hope will help you to overcome those fears. I have made 4 versions of the Dylan pattern, but I’m sure you’ll come up with more. With each version the skills and techniques used will increase to gradually ease you into the world of sewing outerwear.

WORKER JACKET

The first and probably the easiest is an unlined worker style jacket, I made mine in a fairly substantial denim.

It has bias bound seams and simple patch pockets.

PARKA

A modern take on the traditional parka style, this Dylan has a shaped high-low hem, zip fastening, cuffs, waist drawcord, standing collar and is fully lined.

I’m currently making a hooded version of the Dylan parka. I think it’s going to be my perfect coat….!!

ANORAK

Inspired by walking gear, the Dylan Anorak is perfect for braving the elements. I made this one in a beautiful crisp waxed cotton.

Just like the parka it has that gorgeous shaped hem, this time with a hood and again, fully lined with a zip fastening.

PEACOAT

Finally, a traditional pea coat to really hone your outerwear sewing skills. This one is made in a wonderfully soft traditional wool melton.

The Dylan Pea Coat has lots of traditional details: collar and stand, welt pockets, fully lined and a two piece sleeve.

You can still order your signed copy here.  You can see more inside the book in this post.

Remember, today is the last day to enter my worldwide competition to win one of 4 signed copies here.

All these gorgeous photos were taken by Julian Ward © Cico Books and most of the beautiful fabrics were generously provided by Fabworks.
