Dear Wendy I came across your site whilst researching the interest in home sewing in the Sheffield area and it is inspiring to see the kind of workshops and online support you offer to a good number of keen sewers. I am trying to establish my Sewing Machine repair business I operated in Sheffield before following the textile industry overseas some 15 years ago. I am now back in Sheffield and offer machine repairs and servicing to domestic and industrial machines all makes new and old. Hello, I’ve just found your site and it is really helpful. Could you answer a query for me? I want to make some patchwork cushions out of my grandson’s old babygros. Do you think it would be best to apply vilene or similar interface to the fabric before I cut up into squares in order to keep their shape? Any other tips? I will also use a walking foot.

  Hi, I’ve recently done some hand sewn patchwork with knitted fabrics and found it useful to apply some lightweight iron-on interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric before cutting. A walking foot will only help too. Good luck, I hope you enjoy your project it sounds like a good one! Wendy

Hello Wendy. I am currently making the shift dress from your beginners guide book. I am average at sewing and had fun making the dress. I would, however like to make the next one with a slightly deeper neck. How do I make a deeper Round neck on the dress and not have trouble with the facing?

  Hi, I’m so happy to hear that you’re enjoying making the dress!
  To make the neck deeper, redraw the neckline to the new depth on the front dress and make sure you also make exactly the same adjustment to the neckline of the front facing. Depending on how much deeper you make the neck, you might have to also amend the lower edge of the facing to ensure it remains deep enough.
  Hope that makes sense and do let me know how you get on – I love to see pictures of the garments readers make from my book :o)

Hi Sue, very happy to hear you’ve been inspired to have a go at sewing knits!! I’m not sure of any specific classes to help you with your dummy, but if there is anywhere like MIY Workshop where you live doing independent sewing and dressmaking classes, that would be the best place to start. I’m afraid I can’t recommend anyone as I don’t personally know anyone doing it in your area. Best of luck with it and happy sewing!

Hi Sharon, I don’t have another similar workshop in September, so I think one or a few of the weekly sewing classes in September would be the best option. They’re on Tues/Weds/Thurs evening 6.30-8.30pm, Thurs/Fri morning 10-12, Thurs/Fri afternoon 12.15-2.15pm. A single class is £15, or a block of 4 (with 6 weeks to use them) £50 – with a block you’ll also get a 10% discount voucher to use at Ditto Fabrics on Kensington Gardens. Classes have a max. of 5 people and you’re free to work on whatever you want. Let me know what you think!
