Another successful Skirt Making Workshop

I had a lovely group of eager students on Sunday and one sadly stuck in London.

After a really focussed day of hard work………

……..and noises of surprise from the students when they saw how impressive their skirts were turning out, this is what we had:

Pretty impressive aren’t they?  None of these students had made anything from a pattern before, in fact one of them only learned how to use her sewing machine at one of my weekly sewing classes last week!

An a-line skirt really is a great first project for anyone new to sewing.  The shape looks good on almost everyone and it’s a quick garment to make which is easy to get to fit well.  These students are inspired to make more with their new found sewing, zip inserting and faced hemming skills!

Here’s what they thought of the day in their own words:

What did you enjoy most?

“Everything – Wendy is a great teacher.”

“Teacher not in a hurry and allowed me to go at my own speed. Feeling more confident using sewing machine.”

“Class size, learning the ‘proper’ way to put in zips, etc.”

Any other comments?

“Really recommend and a brilliant day out.”  And that from the student who had been given the workshop for her birthday!

Sunday 11th March – Sewing with Knits
A combination of the winter and summer versions of this workshop depending on what you want to make!  Sewing with stretchy jersey fabrics can be tricky on a domestic sewing machine, so at this workshop I’ll show you the best ways to cut and sew knitted fabrics.  I’ll provide you with a choice of winter and summer patterns specifically designed for jersey fabrics for you to whip up something to wear by the end of the day. All you need to bring is some jersey fabric of your choice and matching thread.

Sunday 25th March – **NEW WORKSHOP** Cool Cushions
Cushions don’t have to be boring!  Cushion covers can be a great first project for beginner sewers and provide a blank canvas for more experienced sewers to explore new techniques.  At this workshop you’ll learn the basics of cushion making and we’ll move on to ways of making them a bit more interesting by adding piping, using recycled fabrics and customising with easy appliqué (I’ll provide you with some stencils to use) and pompoms.  Great for presents or to add a splash of Spring colour to your own place.
Suitable for beginners and those with a bit of sewing experience.

  • Class size limited to 5 people.
  • 11am to 4pm.
  • £40 payable in advance to confirm your space.

Sunday 15th April – **NEW WORKSHOP** Wedding & Party Bunting
I have to confess, I’m hesitant about bunting!!  It can look awful, it can look twee, but I plan to show you how to make sure yours is neither!  I want you to make cool bunting so, it’s all in the choice of fabrics, mix of colours, scale & shape of your bunting and how you finish it off and decorate it.  We’ll go through some bunting basics and then look at ways to customise it by adding lettering, embroidery, using ribbon/tape and recycled fabrics.  It doesn’t have to be for a wedding or party though, you might just want it covering your house….!
Suitable for beginners and those with a bit of sewing experience.

  • Class size limited to 5 people.
  • 11am to 4pm.
  • £40 payable in advance to confirm your space.

Sunday 29th April – Sewing Workshop

Come to this Sunday workshop and sew away to your heart’s content. Suitable for absolute beginners who want a kick start to their new sewing habit or more experienced sewers who want a bit more time to focus on a specific project.

  • £40 payable in advance to confirm your space.

Very Impressed

That’s what I was after today’s “Sewing with Knits Winter Workshop”.  I had five very industrious students and we spent a lovely cosy day in the workshop while town was full of Christmas shopping madness in the gloom.

With a choice of 5 different styles of garment to make, here’s what today’s students produced:

A sparkly cowl neck top, a stripey cardi, a cosy shrug, a Bloomsbury inspired cardi and a bold dogstooth check cardi.

Stuck for Christmas presents?

For the past week I’ve had the dreaded lurgy that always seems to get me at this time of year, so have had to endure a bit of enforced quiet downtime.  Watching TV on my laptop in bed curled up with Gypsy dog made it a bit more bearable, but I find it hard to do and annoying that it only ever happens when I’m busy!

Anyway enough of me moaning, although I wasn’t able to teach as I had hardly any voice left, I was able to catch up with a few jobs at home so I’m hoping to upload a flurry of information and news in the next few days.

First up, I’ve already had enquiries and purchases of my gift vouchers this year.  I think they’d make a great present (but I would wouldn’t I?!).  A present that could last a lifetime.

To purchase a voucher or find out more information contact me here.

First birthday

I missed it!  I wrote my first post on this website last year on the 17th of October.  A year ago on the 4th of November the first “Made By” class was taught.  I’m shocked that a year has gone by!

Well, it’s been a busy year and my classes are proving successful.  I’ve learned a lot, I’ve made a lot and I’ve enjoyed it, with only a few hair-pulling moments…

So, what next?

There are lots of exciting developments going on, most of which are still under wraps for a teeny bit longer.

Happy birthday to me!

And thanks to all of you x

Four dates for Sunday workshops to plan before Christmas, not so difficult you might think.  Well, I’ve been ummming and ahhhing and talking to students and friends and here’s the end result; an assortment of popular workshops which have run before and some new ones.  I’m sure I won’t please everyone with this selection but hey, there’s always 2012!

How to use your sewing machine workshop

Look at that for focused concentration!!  Heads down working hard, that’s what I like to see in my workshops!

I think sewing machines as well as students must like these workshops as yesterday saw more machines back from the brink of lonely lives of neglect.  One machine had been in its box in a cupboard for a few years, another had almost ended up being dumped.  By the end of the day they were whirring happily.

Their owners had the following feedback on the workshop:

What did you enjoy most?
“Hands on machine knowledge.”
“Gaining a good all round knowledge.”
“Learning more about how the machine works.”

And about the workshop overall:
“Really clear concise info, friendly and fun.  Learned a lot!”

The funniest part for me were the squeals of disgust when we had a go at cleaning the machines…yep sewing machines need a bit of TLC every now and again and these students now know why!

I’ll be running this workshop again before Christmas, date to be confirmed soon.

Workshops – what would you like?

I’m starting to plan Sunday workshops until Christmas.  Already booked for September are “How to use your Sewing Machine” on the 11th and “Skirt Making Workshop” on the 25th.

What would you like to see for October, November and December?

Here’s a list of my existing workshops:

Pattern Cutting – Skirts – make your own skirt pattern
Pattern Cutting – Trousers – make your own trouser pattern
Sewing with Knits – learn how to sew stretch jersey fabrics & make a garment
Customising – revamp and repair old clothes & charity shop finds
Sewing Workshop – a day of sewing what you want
How to use your Sewing Machine – get to grips with your sewing machine
Skirt Making – make an A-line skirt

Or would you like to see something new?

I wait with open ears…

Sewing with Knits Sunday Workshop

I ran this workshop for the first time yesterday and here’s the brilliant results!

Despite having a choice of 2 skirts, a dress and a top to make, everyone plumped for the frock!  Maybe it was the sunshine and holiday anticipation.

So many of the clothes we wear today are made from knitted jersey fabrics that it’s not surprising so many of my students want to use this fabric.  However, as my 4 students yesterday found out it presents a few challenges, but that’s why a whole day devoted to it was a good idea!

No doubt I’ll be running this workshop again in the future, maybe with some long sleeved, more autumnal styles on offer…

Here’s what some of yesterday’s students thought of the workshop:

“Great time all round, fab project.”
“Excellent day and company.  Learned loads.”
What did you enjoy most about the day?
“Getting to go home with a new item of clothing, feeling industrious.”

Thanks to my 4 lovely students for making it an enjoyable day for me too!

Yesterday’s Pattern Cutting Workshop

Although yesterday was a scorcher here in Brighton my Pattern Cutting Workshop was full and I had a lovely day showing 4 eager students how to draft the perfectly fitting skirt pattern.

Lots of concentration, a bit of maths and plenty of mutual encouragement resulted in 4 perfect skirt toiles.

Ladies, I expect to see you around Brighton parading a whole collection of pencil and a-line skirts!

Here’s some of their feedback on the day:

“Supportive, positive, step-by-step instructions and guidance throughout the session.”

“It’s been awesome!”

“A great way to spend a Sunday.  Highly recommendable.”
